YOUNG NIGERIAN FEMALE INVENTS ELECTRICITY-GENERATING FOOTBALL

A young Harvard-trained Nigerian female, Jessica Matthews, has created and presented to President Goodluck Jonathan, an ‘electricity-generating football.’

Nigeria’s Minister for Industry, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga, who oversaw the presentation, praised the multi-functionality of the product, stating that it could also be used as a mobile phone.

“We are also looking at the possibilities of manufacturing it in Nigeria and see how we can make it cheaper in this country. I am glad that Jessica has also agreed to be one of our Ambassadors in terms of promoting entrepreneurship in our universities”, Aganga said.

Reacting to the presentation, President Jonathan commended her creative and multi-talented nature – given that she ventured into applied sciences despite her academic career being limited to social sciences including psychology and economics.

He also pinpointed that the choice to launch such a unique product in her home country is proof of her patriotism.

The invention should provide an alternative and more suitably cheaper means of sourcing for energy as we, Nigerians, continue to employ strategies in our bid to provide adequately power for both our business and domestic uses

PDP: SOUTH EAST ENDORSES JONATHAN FOR 2015 PRESIDENCY

Ahead of the 2015 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South East zone has endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate.

The PDP zonal vice chairman, Col. Austin Akobundu (rtd) disclosed this at a PDP rally in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

He stated that President Jonathan has, so far, done well and therefore deserves a second term in office.

“The PDP in the South East zone has declared its full support for President Jonathan to contest a second term in office; he has done very well and deserves a second term and we, the PDP in the South East zone will work hard to ensure his victory”. Akobundu said.

Also, at the rally, Prince Kenneth Emekayi was presented by Akobundu as the authentic chairman of the PDP in Anambra State, as well as the governorship aspirants of the party for the November 16 election in the state.

The 11 governorship aspirants who attended the rally were: Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, Mrs Josephine Anenih, Chief Sylvester Okonkwo, Dr.Obinna Uzoh, Chief Ugochukwu Okeke, Chief Walter Ubaka Okeke, Comrade Tony Nwoye, Senator Emma Anosike, Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, Mr. Charles Odunukwe, and Chief Akachukwu Nwankpo.

'AWKA CITY HAS ENJOYED UNINTERRUPTED POWER SUPPLY FOR 3 WEEKS' - President Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed his delight over the recent three weeks of uninterrupted public power supply supposedly enjoyed by Awka, the capital of Anambra state.

In a statement released on several social networking platforms, President Jonathan said 'Even in these challenging times we must encourage the good news narrative to thrive so as to drown out the unacceptable negatives in the polity.'

He further stated that an occurrence that is worthy of note is the celebration by City of Awka in Anambra state of three weeks of uninterrupted public power supply and counting.

"I personally wish Nigeria had achieved this milestone decades ago, but nevertheless we are making steady progress. More cities will soon be able to have such celebrations because the Roadmap to Power Sector Reforms is having the desired effects with almost all of Nigeria's electricity Distribution companies (Discos) and Generating companies (Gencos) now in private hands as I promised on the 26th of August 2010 in Lagos when I launched the Power Roadmap." He added.

However, residents of Awka have denied the claim of three weeks uninterrupted power supply.

A receptionist for an Information Technology outfit along Arthur Eze avenue, Awka, who spoke in anonymity, admitted that power supply to her place of work is an average of two hours per day.

"We enjoy public power supply at afternoons, usually for two hours each day. It has been this way for a long while now"  She said.

Other residents do seem to concur with her.  Simply Put, there has not been uninterrupted power supply for three weeks in Awka city. Perhaps not in recent times.

'YOU CAN'T BURY PDP' - PRESIDENCY REPLIES GOV. NYAKO

Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Political Matters, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, has swiftly rejected as mere brag the threat by governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa and four other PDP, governors to bury the party, if stakeholders are unable to crack the crisis rocking the party.

Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, further disclosed that the five governors were incapable of bringing down the PDP. He alleged that the governors were trying to force President Jonathan out of power in 2015. Gulak, however, said that they would fail, as their agenda was not in the interest of the generality of Nigerians.

“They (the governors) cannot bury PDP, as the party is above them.

“Their agenda is not to bury PDP but to get President Goodluck Jonathan out but they will certainly fail. I can assure you that all those in that group and sharing their agenda will also fail woefully, as Nigerians are wiser,” the Presidential adviser said.

Meanwhile, Former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, has described the five Northern governors as ‘real patriots’ and praised them for taking the trouble to seek answers to the nation’s crises.

“I just want to commend the governors and some of their colleagues. I am very impressed because they see the problems of this country as their problems and they have taken the right steps to make sure that they consult widely in trying to find solutions to some of the nagging problems. It shows they are real patriots and I am very happy with them.” Babangida said:
