A watchdog group for the environment (Center for Environmental Health, NY) has warned that the caramel colouring used in Pepsi contains a worrisome level of cancer-causing chemicals known as 4-Methylimidazole, or simply 4-Mel.
Four months ago, both Pepsi and Coca-Cola tested positive to the chemicals i.e. 4-Mel. However, Coca-Cola, in June, was found to no longer contain the dangerous chemicals indicating the company took appropriate actions after the first test in March, 2013.
But then, Pepsi company has publicly claimed that Food Regulatory Agencies all over the World consider Pepsi caramel colouring safe for human consumption.
Some expert have noted that a person must drink up to 1,000 bottles of Pepsi or Coca-Cola per day to reach the level of cancer risk
