BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER WINS GERMAN PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD


Bayern Munich vice-captain and super midfielder, Bastian Schweinsteiger has been voted the German Player of the Year by Sports Journalists.

Bastian Schweinsteiger won 92 votes from German sports journalists out of 527 available ballots, just edging out his creative partners on either flank; Franck Ribery and Thomas Müller both of whom came in second and third with 87 and 85 votes respectively.

Schweinsteiger, who is a Bayern youth academy product and one-club player said that he had not been expecting to win the award..

"It really does surprise me a bit, for there were times [during the past season] when reports about me were rather critical," Schweinsteiger said,

"This, too, is a title for the whole team." He added.

The coach of the year award was practically undisputed as former Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes, (who secured a treble for the club last season) secured 383 votes from sports writers, ahead of Freiburg's Christian Streich on 77 votes.

Germany's woman footballer of the year - Martina Müller also hailed from a treble-winning team. (Wolfsburg)  securing the most votes, ahead of German international striker Celia Okoyino da Mbabi,
